{"id":1404,"date":"2018-01-23T17:16:40","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T15:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2018-01-24T12:01:55","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T10:01:55","slug":"aalto-students-bring-life-to-a-wonderland-for-annual-winter-musical-by-uniarts-helsinki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/aalto-students-bring-life-to-a-wonderland-for-annual-winter-musical-by-uniarts-helsinki\/","title":{"rendered":"Aalto students bring life to a Wonderland for annual winter musical by Uniarts Helsinki"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In\u00a0Aalto Studios&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sewing-studio\">costume\u00a0studio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/set-construction-studio\">set construction workshop<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Tja\u0161a Frumen<\/strong> and <strong>Elina Str\u00f6m<\/strong>, both MA\u00a0students in Costume Design, and\u00a0<strong>Oscar Dempsey<\/strong>, MA student in Design for Performing Arts, are hard at work on imaginative costumes and set designs for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2060359534197293\/\">&#8221;Ihmemaa,&#8221;<\/a> a musical production led by students\u00a0at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniarts.fi\/\">University of the Arts Helsinki<\/a>. &#8221;Ihmemaa&#8221; translates to &#8221;wonderland,&#8221; as this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/talvimusikaali\/\">winter musical \u2014 part of an annual tradition<\/a> \u2014 is an adaptation\u00a0of the classic\u00a0<em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Str\u00f6m and Frumen have been diligently gathering\u00a0costume resources, designing, and fitting their works to match the actors and requirements of the production.\u00a0The pair are working\u00a0admirably to overcome tight constraints, supplementing costumes from <a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wardrobe\">Aalto&#8217;s costume stores<\/a> with\u00a0clothing items from their own wardrobes, as well as those of the cast and crew and their family and friends.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1404 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1282-copy-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1282-copy-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1392-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1392-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1347-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1347-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1122-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1122-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Conversely, they also face wide-open creative control \u2014 both a blessing and a curse\u00a0for any creative professional \u2014 and are\u00a0rising to the challenge.\u00a0&#8221;The perks of designing for the wonderland is that there are no limits,&#8221; says Frumen, &#8221;but in every world there are rules to be followed, and they should be consistent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Their main workshop space is the <a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sewing-studio\">costume studio at Aalto Studios<\/a>, where the pair are able to work alongside and learn from studio master <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/anja-behm\">Anja Behm<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>who&#8217;s drawing from her past experience to create some of the headpieces for the production \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BeSQTxSAXWA\/?taken-by=aaltostudios\">rabbit and cat ears, mostly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dempsey has been busy with a more offbeat\u00a0task: crafting a set of giant styrofoam teeth to be used as a backdrop, conveying to the audience the idea that much of the story happens inside the main character&#8217;s head. Crafting surreal sculptures isn&#8217;t an unfamiliar project for Dempsey, who&#8217;s past work as a fine artist took him through Ireland, the UK and Denmark.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-1404 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1248-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1248-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1292-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1292-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1422-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1422-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/sv\/img_1427-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1427-256x256.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>&#8221;I\u2019m trying to take whatever knowledge I have at the moment about making stuff and applying it to the stage,&#8221; says Dempsey, as he continues to carve away at the styrofoam blocks that will become teeth.\u00a0Like Dempsey&#8217;s art\u00a0in the past, the teeth aren&#8217;t just a backdrop, they&#8217;re also interactive: two of the half-meter high teeth will be removable by the actors on stage during the production. With the help of workshop master\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/studios.aalto.fi\/jyri-lahelma\"><strong>Jyri Lahelma<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Dempsey&#8217;s exploring using magnets to\u00a0make removability easy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/talvimusikaali\/\">winter musical, a regular annual production<\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniarts.fi\/\">Uniarts Helsinki<\/a> students,\u00a0isn&#8217;t part of their regular curriculum but instead something the students take on together. Str\u00f6m and Frumen estimate there are 40\u201350 students taking part, from the designers, crew, cast, and band.
