Getting your own podcast show up and running at Aalto University is more than possible. We have both the resources and support<\/strong> to make sure you get from initial planning to leaning back and listening on your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Getting started<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Option 1<\/strong>: You can begin your journey with Aalto Communications<\/strong> to get production support and end up in the Aalto University portfolio in services like Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify. Aalto Communications has certain quality guidelines and processes that they explain well in their \u2018Podcast planning and production<\/a>\u2019 primer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Option 2<\/strong>: Alternatively<\/strong>, if your content is more experimental or you\u2019re more of a do-it-yourself person, we have a great pipeline all the way from recording to publishing in these same global services, provided by Aalto Studios. You can start by getting to know our recording facilities and then setting up a consultation session with us at the Web Studio<\/a>; we\u2019ll walk you through all the steps necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Recording and Editing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While audio work can be done on lightweight personal devices, we like to provide dedicated spaces with good equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Podcast Studio<\/a> in the Marsio building is our favorite spot for recording audio podcasts. It\u2019s available to all Aalto people as a self-service place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the fall 2024, we\u2019re refurbishing the A Pod <\/a>booth to function as an editing space, providing you with both text and audio based editing tools, including translitteration. Ask us for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Hosting<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you have the audio files, episode descriptions and a catchy name for your show, it needs to be put on the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of where you started<\/strong>, your media ends up in a custom hosted WordPress installation here at Aalto Studios, from where we stream the audio, images and text to listeners’ devices. Adding content is easy and straight-forward, and new episodes reach your listeners immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Option 1 : Only the podcast, please<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This WordPress can function as the podcast feed source only<\/strong>, without any visible pages for people to see. This is great if you\u2019d rather like to create any accompanying web pages<\/a> in the aalto.fi – web site. The audience uses their Podcast apps to discover and listen to the episodes, and any text and images are rendered in the player app. Shows like Alustatalouden faktat ja myytit | Aalto-yliopisto<\/a> do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Option 2 : Podcast and a full web site to go with it<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, you can use your new WordPress site to build a whole web site<\/strong> experience of your own, like oravan pes\u00e4 \u2013 a gatherer of voices<\/a> or TuTa Audiobooks \u2013 at Aalto University<\/a>. This is great for more experimental projects, or ones where you don\u2019t want the strong Aalto University brand to overpower collaborators’ brands. An address of your choosing can be added to the site, or you can stick with our podcast.aalto.fi\/yourname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Publishing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To let the world know your show<\/strong> exists<\/strong>, it can be submitted to the directories at Apple Podcasts<\/a>, Google Podcasts<\/a> and Spotify<\/a>. These services will list and categorise your show for easy discovery and for listening in apps, pointing peoples devices to pick up the episodes from the WordPress site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As usual, we have alternatives to match your needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Option 1 : The Aalto University portfolio<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If you started your journey with Aalto Communications, you\u2019re already on your way to the Aalto University portfolio in these services. For more details, see their guide<\/a> and contact them for more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Option 2 : Let Aalto Studios do it<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Other podcast shows can be added by us, using our Aalto Studios accounts in these services. The only difference to option 1 is that your show doesn’t appear in the Aalto Communications curated collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Option 3 : Do-it-yourself for maximum control <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You can also create a free account at each of these services yourself, and get direct access to listener statistics and other features. These directories are simply a place for you to paste in the address of your show and check a few boxes; they\u2019ll take care of the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, you don’t need<\/strong> to publish your show at all. You can hand people a direct link to the feed, or have people visit a web page to listen to the audio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extend your listener experience<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The preferred distribution file format for the audio part of your podcast is MP3. And it has a few secrets up its largely metaphorical sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a tool like Forecast<\/a>, you can add chapters and chapter art that displays in the player app (when supported). This way your listeners can skip to relevant sections and see images of what’s being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are baked into the .mp3 file and require no additional futzing around with image files and timelines. Ask us for more guidance on editing, if this extra level of detail sounds interesting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
