Continuing with our recap of the workshops and presentations at Nordic Fablab Bootcamp 2024, we`d like to thank all of our amazing participants. Everyone from the community brought a unique piece of knowledge to the bootcamp, giving us the chance to learn new skills from each other.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Nordic Fablab Bootcamp 2024 at Aalto Fablab. For four days, over 40 participants took part in various workshops, presentations and campus tours. All of us had the chance to showcase what we`ve been working on for the past year, and learn from each other. Here`s a quick recap of the activities we had at NFB 24`!

Aalto Studios MAGICS cooperated with Finnish Chamber Opera in producing Posthuman – a multiartistic science fiction opera performance.
In the story, future posthuman creatures revive an extinct species, human, whose genes and memes are placed into a creature that resembles a human child. The question remains, can humans be replaced, and will anyone remember humans in the future. One of the voices in the performance is produced by artificial intelligence.
The cooperation between the Finnish Chamber Opera and Aalto Studios MAGICS initiated in the early stages of the production. This resulted in two students in New Media, Calvin Guillot and Małgorzata Nowicka creating the visualizations for the performance. This is how they describe their experience:
“We were fascinated and honoured to work in such a multidisciplinary project and to experience the multilingual expression of all the people involved. We had a lot of space for artistic exploration and an interesting challenge to operate within the constraints of the rich visual language of the play. We collaborated with the director on the content of the visualisations by using the artificial intelligence models and generative simulations. With the incorporation of the tools of new media, we strived for a manifestation of the ideas of posthumanism that is more subtle and sensitive - that is not confined to telling a story about artificial intelligence and digital life, but tackles the questions of the human condition. Facilitating this message was the most rewarding and exciting aspect of the process for us. “

This week we have the Experimental Music Workshop taking up most of the space. Students are building a vintage synthesiser (originally designed by Erkki Kurenniemi) from prefabricated parts. A lot of soldering, assembling and making random (and also not so random) noise.

Grow Unit v0.1 proof-of-concept hydroponic system for testing same plants with different light settings. With the power of Raspberry Pi one could achieve a degree gamification that would add extra layers of fun on top of hydroponics itself! We did a collaboration workshop at @mplab_liepaja as a part of the Update 2022 program, where participants could see the different layers needed to develop such a system. We covered #kicad #solvespace #openscad #freecad #rasbberrypi #python #gpiozero a open source design workflow for rapid prototyping.

We planted the seeds here less than a week ago and the lettuce is sprouting already in our experimental hydroponic system.
We are building this for a workshop where participants would be introduced to electronics design with KiCad and computer-aided design with FreeCAD along with setting up Raspberry Pi controller with Git, Python and Systemd. It will feature building Raspberry Pi controller HAT to drive a pump and 4 channel horticulture LED module.
